Ian Mifsud

Since as long as I could remember I would go to church with my parents. I remember colouring in on the chair, I remember being distracted at what was a distant, irreverent sermon and time of singing songs. I just remember how boring church was and that it went on for hours. I dint want anything to do with it.

Eventually me and my brother were old enough to start making the decision for ourselves about whether to go or not. Slowly I stopped going. There was no need, it was all external and irrelevant to me, there was no purpose in it.

As I grew into my teens I started hanging with my brothers’ friends some of who would go to church. I soon realised there was something very different about these people. They were genuine, fun and most impacting was how much acceptance and love they had. They went to church meetings so I slowly followed even though it was mainly because I had nothing better to do.

Due to a handful of specific people who were bold enough to reveal to me that it was not good enough just attend church and that the point of church was not church, but something life-transforming, something bigger, something which would change my outlook on everything, it was a realisation of who this man Jesus was and how what He did changed EVERYTHING!

I had to make that decision to believe this was the truth and that I had to respond to it. I prayed that decision when I must have been around 13. It was only after this decision that I slowly learned more about God and His relevance in my life, and understood his reality demanded a response from me, in what I lived for, this new purpose was impacting and eternal.

The more I understood and learned from these people, and from interacting with God, the journey only continued and got more real.  I never became perfect, I am still am not, but as a result of knowing I am set free from  the past,  the things I have done wrong and all of that has now gone away. Today I want to live a life which honours the One who created me. The life I lead now is one of hope, purpose and freedom, how or why would I want any other life?
